We use evidence-based structured literacy — the approach with the strongest research base for children who find reading hard.
Structured literacy is a systematic, explicit approach to teaching reading. It's built on decades of research into how the brain learns to decode and understand written language.
Unlike traditional approaches that rely on guessing, memorisation or repetition alone, structured literacy teaches children the rules of how language works — from individual sounds (phonemes) up to word meaning and sentence structure.
For children who find reading hard, this explicit instruction is the difference between struggling and thriving.
Understanding the sound structure of spoken language.
Mapping sounds to letters and letter patterns.
Building word knowledge and understanding word parts.
Reading with accuracy, speed, and understanding.
Structured literacy is the way of teaching reading that has the strongest evidence behind it — especially for children who've found reading hard. It's the approach recommended by Australian and international literacy researchers, and it's what we use in every Hello Learners session.
"Reading isn't natural the way speaking is. Our brains have to be taught to connect the sounds we hear to the letters on the page — and some children need that taught step by step."
Nothing is left for the child to guess or work out on their own. Every sound, letter, and rule is taught directly, in an order that builds from simple to complex.
We start with the sounds inside spoken words, then link those sounds to the letters that represent them. This is the piece most struggling readers have missed.
Every lesson builds on the one before. Nothing is introduced until the foundation is solid, so your child is always learning from a place of confidence, not confusion.
Children see the letters, say the sounds, and often write or tap them out at the same time. Using multiple senses helps the learning stick.
We keep checking what's landed and what hasn't. If something isn't clicking, we notice quickly and adjust — rather than assuming more practice is the answer.
Decades of research — including the work backing the Science of Reading — show this is how children actually learn to read. Especially children who've struggled.
Most children who struggle with reading haven't been taught the code. They've been asked to guess at words, memorise them on sight, or use the pictures as clues. That works for some kids for a while — but it falls apart when the words get longer and the pictures go away.
Structured literacy gives children the actual system. Once they have it, reading stops being a guessing game and becomes something they can do.
